STOP FILLING YOUR LUNGS WITH SMOKE

 THE
GREAT AMERICAN
SMOKEOUT®

Summit Psychological Services is committed to improving the quality of life for those individuals and families whose lives are affected by emotional distress or addictive disorders. Helping people to stop smoking is, therefore, taken very seriously.

Smoking is still the most preventable cause of death and illness in the world.  Despite this fact, 1 in 5 deaths are still estimated to have been caused by smoking.  More than 16 million Americans are living with smoking related diseases, and smoking will cause 480,000 premature deaths this year.

Most people who smoke cigarettes are aware of these alarming statistics but continue to smoke.  Why? The reason isn’t because they don’t want to – the reason is that it is one of the most addictive substances to try to quit.  About 70% of adult smokers reported that they wanted to stop smoking, and 55 % of this group set off to quit with every intention and desire to be successful.  Only seven percent were successful in a 6-12 month study[1]

The key is not to give up! Even though it is hard to stop smoking you can join the hundreds and thousands of people who gave up smoking by empowering themselves with knowledge, resources and support.

Each year about 1.3 million smokers do quit. Since 1965, more than 40 percent of all adults who have ever smoked have quit. And research shows that with good smoking cessation programs, 20 to 40 percent of participants are able to quit smoking and stay off cigarettes for at least one year.[2]
