COGMED
What is Cogmed?
Cogmed is a research-based cognitive training program designed to strengthen working memory—the brain’s ability to hold and use information long enough to complete tasks. For individuals with ADHD, working memory is often impaired, leading to challenges with focus, impulse control, and follow-through. Cogmed helps improve these areas by offering structured, engaging exercises that target and build attention skills over time.
Imagine you're trying to clean and reorganize your room. Working memory is what helps you remember the steps you planned—first the closet, then the desk, then the shelves. When working memory is weak, it’s harder to stay on task and follow through. Cogmed supports the brain’s ability to do just that—stay focused, remember steps, and complete what you start.

This kind of training is typically used alongside other treatment options like medication or therapy. It’s not a substitute, but it can be a powerful addition—especially for those who continue to struggle with focus and regulation even with medication. One of the benefits of Cogmed is that it doesn’t come with side effects, making it a safe and well-tolerated option for many children, teens, and adults.

At Summit Psychological Services, Cogmed training is offered under the expert guidance of Dr. Tiffany Sandoval, who has advanced training in neuropsychology and assessment. Her clinical insight helps tailor the training process to each client’s unique needs, ensuring both efficacy and compassionate care.

What Is Cogmed Training?

Activities range from memory-matching games to fast-paced attention tasks. As you progress, the system adapts to your performance, keeping you challenged—but not overwhelmed.

To support success, each participant works with a trained Cogmed coach. Your coach checks in weekly, offering encouragement, tracking progress, and answering any questions. This structure helps keep motivation up and ensures the training is used effectively.

Cogmed is best suited for children 8 and older, teens, and adults—including older adults who may be noticing changes in memory or attention. Because the training is intensive, it’s important to wait until any medication or treatment plans are stabilized before beginning.
What Kind of Results Can I Anticipate?
Many people report noticeable changes after completing the program. Children often say they feel more in control of their actions and emotions. Parents notice a greater sense of independence and maturity—fewer reminders are needed to brush teeth, take a shower, or stay on task with schoolwork.

Teens and adults often report being more attentive in conversations, more aware of social cues, and better able to follow through on responsibilities. Research suggests that about 75% of children with ADHD show reduced symptoms of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity after completing Cogmed.

Functional brain imaging studies have even shown changes in brain activity following the training, suggesting real neurological shifts.
Does the Research Support Our Experience?

While not every professional agrees on the extent of Cogmed’s benefits, multiple studies suggest promising results. In a widely cited 2005 study, children with ADHD who completed five weeks of Cogmed training showed significant improvements not just in memory, but also in attention, focus, and task completion. Subsequent research has echoed these findings.

It’s important to remember that Cogmed is most effective when used as part of a comprehensive treatment approach. That may include therapy, medication, behavior supports, and school accommodations. But for those looking to build focus and strengthen working memory, Cogmed offers an innovative and practical tool—backed by expert support at Summit Psychological Services.
