Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is taught worldwide and was featured on the PBS special Healing and the Mind. MBSR was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD, author of the bestselling books Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness and Wherever You Go, There You Are: Mindfulness Meditation in Everyday Life.

MBSR teaches mindfulness meditation, mindfulness yoga, and mindful living. The majority of graduates report lasting benefits: less pain, greater ability to cope with pain and stress, greater ability to relax, and more energy and optimism. Some say their life has been profoundly changed.

MBSR has helped people with a variety of psychological and medical conditions, including depression, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer, backache, headache, fibromyalgia, gastrointestinal problems, fatigue, sleep problems, and more. It is an excellent complement to treatment provided by a psychotherapist or physician.

Many healthy people take MBSR, as well—to disengage from life’s drama; to quiet mind chatter; and to cultivate calmness, clarity, perspective, and peace. Some participants use it to improve performance during sports, presentations, and other high-stress situations.

Do you ever feel caught up in the rush and pressure of everyday living?  Have you ever wanted to turn off the insufferable chatter in your brain, or quiet that part of your mind which is barking orders at you throughout the day?  Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is the antidote to a hectic mind. Over a thousand scientific studies have demonstrated the benefits of this program to help people reduce stress and find greater balance, ease and peace of mind.

Developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, MBSR is an experience-based program which teaches you how to live in the present moment with openness and acceptance. It is designed to help you cultivate a mindfulness practice through guided meditation, readings and discussion... all within a supportive and intimate group environment.

At SPS we are offering two Mindfulness programs based on the MBSR course and led by Kerry Alan Rasp, BA, MBSR, CU, Meditation Instructor and Life Coach and Jessica O'Neill, BA, MBSR, Mindfulness Instructor for adults and children

Foundations of Mindfulness, MBSR (Part One)

This is a four-week introduction to Mindfulness.  The goal is to give you a solid foundation of Mindfulness.  You will:

  • learn introductory practices such as meditation;

  • become familiar with being “in” your body (as opposed to up in your head);

  • begin to establish breathing as a core practice;

  • explore ways to be mindful for the holiday break.

Going Deeper, MBSR (Part Two)

Part two is a four-week program designed to help you establish a mindfulness practice. The goals include:

  • deepening your breathing practices;

  • increasing your awareness and experience of feeling calm;

  • practicing mindfulness in daily living;

  • providing resources.

Both of the programs will include discussion themes:

  • understanding the nature of the “monkey mind”;

  • inclining the mind towards kindness, compassion, joy and acceptance;

  • responding vs reacting;

  • mindful communication;

  • equanimity;

  • exploring a new way of living: The Mindful Life.
